One of Canada’s great cities to visit is Quebec. It is a bustling metropolis, but one that has old world charm. Yet, that charm is somehow different than that you find in Old Montreal or even New Orleans. You get the feel of a new economy and lifestyle coupled with the atmosphere and character of the settlers’ origins in 17th century Europe.
Then there are the conditions and lifestyle adjustments they had to make to live in the new environment. The shores of the St. Lawrence River were replete with new customs, vegetation and atmosphere that varied greatly from what many were familiar with in France. And the heights that soar above those shores served as excellent fortifications for the security of the community. Today Lower Quebec is the center of the most popular examples of early settler lifestyle in North America, while also having some of the finest restaurants. And in Upper Quebec on the heights above the river you find some of the greatest winter activities and entertainment in eastern Canada. When we visit Quebec, we make it our business to stop at one of the many fine restaurants there. Dressed in the best winter wear we own from Hudson’s Bay, we order the latest dishes and enjoy the entertainment. Then we go to the excitement and the winter amusement park on the slopes of Upper Quebec. We also visit some of the historic buildings and sites that abound in the city. There are treats like artic dog sled rides, ski slopes, and toboggan rides waiting for the family to enjoy. And many people are eager to spend at least a single night in the ice hotel, where almost every item is carved from blocks of ice.
When relaxing in the hotel where we stay on our visits we usually wear comfortable robes we’ve purchased at discounts from Hudson’s Bay using Groupon coupons. Often we take votes to decide what our next activity will be for the coming day. You can never see everything you’d like, but we manage to get around quite a bit on our visits to Quebec City. And it’s always a good idea to leave something to look forward to seeing on your next visit.
